The Last Few Days- June 1

Ok. Here it is. Several days to catch up on. It’s been very hard to get wifi or stay connected long enough to do much more than recieve some WhatsApp’s.

Back to the day we went to the escarpment. This is an elevation change that can be seen from where folks live in Garu. It takes about 45 minutes of very rough rocky roads to get there. Reminded us very much of how the road up to La Mesa used to be when we lived in Mexico. Once we got up there, we walked and climbed or scrambled up some rocks and boulders. It’s amazing to see the huge baobob trees growing out of what appears to be pure rock. It was a beautiful view from up there. Looking out over the lower elevation and across to where a small mountian peak towers over the villages. This escarpment is very close to the Togo border. Had us a picnic lunch in some shade and met the white lady who lives over there. Denise is her name. She and her husband built a compound and started a tree nursery some 40 years ago. The husband has since passed a way and she has kept up the place. Or sort of kept it up. Looks pretty ramshackle to us. She in her mid 70s so seems to me she might be needing to shut her operations down before long.

We spent the morning on Tuesday packing up and doing some last minute washing. We also went to see a couple more of folks’ acquaintances. A lady who was in accident and her husband left her because of the handicap she was left with. She has a few children and tries to make a living with her little store. Sounds like she really needs another operation on her back but doesn’t have the money to have it done.

Another horribly pathetic situation was with Peter. He was paralyzed some years back in a mining accident maybe.  He is totally bedridden and tends to be quite complainy. By all appearances, he has reason to complain, if anyone ever did. He lays on a hospital bed in a hot tiny mud room. Calls dad a couple times a day sometimes. Doesn’t like his moms cooking. Wants cold water, not just any water. His nurse isn’t good enough… anyway it was a very pathetic situation.

We left folks place and town shortly after 2 headed for “the rocks”. Hoz’ met us there and we clambered over more boulders and rocks that appear to be tumbled and tossed around by some giant hand. Another very pretty view from up there. Back to Hoz’ to drop erika and Nicholas off to stay night there. The rest of us went next door to a nice little motel   Clean tiny rooms. And A/C. Except our a/c gave out about 1 int the morning so the rest of the night was quite warm for these pansies.

After an early morning breakfast with Hoz’ we piled back in the pickup and started out towards Mole Park. Found a nice KFC for lunch. Even enjoyed a chocolate sundae there. Got to the game park in time to register for the evening safari. Ordered supper, the kids enjoyed the pool. Met some other Americans who we really enjoyed visiting with.
