Beach, Sickness, and Home

After that relaxing day at Dalens, we’ll relaxing for some of us, we left right after breakfast for the coast. Our destination was a beach house we had rented rooms in right near Elmina. It was so neat to get there and sit on the beach watching the waves. This beach had quite the wild water. We had rented a couple body boards and erika ans Nicholas had lots of fun with those. Dad and Merv enjoyed cooling off in the water also. I had fun sitting on a chair under the palms watching them. There were these small fishing boats pulled up on the beach with guys lounging around. Some looked like they were fixing the nets. Others were playing some sort of dice game. It’s coconut season so you could ask to have a coconut split open if you so wished. The water or milk inside is good and supposedly good for your stomach. Some like the meat…

Felt bad for mom. She’s still not feeling well. She sat out with me for a while on the beach, but soon didn’t feel the greatest again. Could hardly choke down supper. Fever. Washed out. Traveling these roads doesn’t make it any better.

In the morning, Merv wasn’t well. But thankfully it just lasted a couple hours. At least the worst of it. He didn’t feel like eating a whole lot most of the day, but didn’t seem so bad after a while. The rest of us ate a good breakfast on the rooftop after watching the sun rise over the water. Except the horizon was cloudy. After breakfast and closing up folks room, we left mom resting in our room and the rest of us headed to a slave castle. These were big huge building that were holding places for slaves after they were captured and marched from their tribal homes. From these castles they were loaded onto ships headed for America or the Caribbean or Brazil. This was the place where they tried to break their the negros wills. Crammed them into small dungeons, abused them, made smaller and smaller doorways so they had to keep crouching lower and lower as they went from dungeon to ship. It was terrible. Got a few souvenirs there afterwards. Back to the beach house to load up and get all our things packed good enough for the flight back. We thought we had left enough time that we could sit down and eat somewhere before going to the airport but the traffic was so horrid that we just crept along. I don’t know if the last 30 miles took us 2 hours… I wasn’t keeping close track, but we just had time to go straight to the airport. All bags checked ok and everything went well. Flight from Accra to New York was 10.5 hours long but since we left around 10:30 PM, we slept a good share of the night. Was glad for the 4 hour layover in New York. It’s huge place when you fly international amd go through customs there and then go over to the domestic terminals. Joel picked us up in Cleveland. Grabbed wendys on our way home.  I have been washing and unpacking and watering since I got home. Nicholas took a nap he could hardly wake up from. And now I need to get some supper around.

We were so glad we could go visit folks yet before they come home. We left Erika there with them so she can help them wrap some things up the last two months yet.

Sounds like mom is still not feeling good, but maybe with some treatment she’s taking will get over whatever it was that got ahold of her.

Another trip, more good memories!
